SUBJECT: Fairness - Government aid and apartment searching

Recently I got the wonderfull opportunity to go apartment searching because, as you may know, I was too late in renewing my lease at our current place, Harbor Vilalge. I can't say that I'm really upset about having to move but I would haved prefered to have it be my choice.

Anyway what annoyed me is that some of the places that we looked at that were in our price range were income restricted or tax properties. In a few cases (like one) these apartments had two different rental rates. One for lower income people and one was listed at "market value". This didn't bother me because I do belive in helping the less fortuneate. The one complex that we looked at that did this also, I believe, segregated the lower and higher income classes. The reason I think this is that once the lady found out our income, she only had one apartment that was available or in the market value category. What annoyed me is that most places that didn't tell you in advance that they were income restricted until after you get there because they didn't want you to overlook them 'cause you thought you were over the limit. Well the limits from what I found were the same for all of Richmond and for two people was $32,000. What I don't understand is how 2 people who make under $32,000 can afford a $800 rent payment.

Why is this? Why is it that it seems at times you are better off not working, having more kids than you can afford, and expecting government assistance. When I first moved to Virginia I was excited to find a free clinic that was willing to help me with my insulin prescription. They asked what I made and I told them I didn't have a job at this time. They hooked me up with a ton of insulin at little to no cost. That has long since gone and now that I have a job, I can't get any assistance 'cause I make too much and I don't have insurance for the first 90+ days.

At what point is the government finally going to realize and do something about this? Would it not make more sense to spend this money in education, force people to give children they can't properly take care of to an adoption agency, setup group housing that require a person to do something to give back to society?
